Atwood, KS – January 2026 – Rawlins County USD 105 has been awarded the Dollar General Literacy Foundation Beyond Words Grant, a disaster relief grant supporting K-12 public school libraries that have experienced significant damage.

Following a fire in June 2023 that significantly impacted library resources at Rawlins County Jr-Sr High School, the district applied for the Beyond Words grant in October 2025. Funding was awarded in January 2026 and will support the replacement of books, media, and library equipment to restore student access to literacy materials.

Atwood Dollar General Store Manager John Ellers, and District Manager Ben Michels visited the school to present the grant check to students, librarian Lacy Walker, USD 105 administration, and the Rawlins County Jr-Sr High English department staff.

The Beyond Words program assists public school libraries located within 15 miles of a Dollar General store that have experienced substantial damage due to a natural disaster, fire, or other federally recognized emergency.

Established in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation supports literacy and education initiatives nationwide, helping communities rebuild access to learning opportunities.

On behalf of USD 105-Rawlins County, thank you to the Dollar General Literacy Foundation for awarding the Beyond Words Grant in the amount of $20,000. We are deeply grateful for your generous support and for partnering with us in our efforts to rebuild our school’s media center.

Since the fire in June 2023, our students have relied on alternative methods to access reading materials. This grant will allow us to restore vital resources and provide our students with easier and more consistent access to the books and learning materials they need to be successful.

Your commitment to literacy and education makes a meaningful difference for our students and community. Thank you for your continued support.
