Gary Worthy Vietnam War Scholarship
This $500 scholarship is awarded to the best entry whose topic is related to the Vietnam War or its aftermath. It is in honor of Vietnam Veteran Gary Worthy from Atwood, Kansas. During the Vietnam War, Worthy was a 1st LT. Aeroscout Platoon Leader for the Air Calvary Troop of the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment in the U.S. Army. He was severely wounded in October of 1968 and was transported to Japan, ultimately ending up in the Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver where he recovered. Several years later, Worthy was made a Major in the U.S. Army. This scholarship is provided through an anonymous donor and Sunflower Aero Inc.
Students attempting to earn this scholarship must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and write a research paper related to the Vietnam War. The research paper must be a minimum of 1250 words and include a works cited page with a minimum of 5 sources, 2 of which should be primary sources. Those sources must be cited within the research paper either through the MLA format or through the utilization of footnotes.
