Dear USD 105 Parents and Community Members,
As we begin a new school year, I want to make you aware of two new policies adopted by the USD 105 Board of Education regarding technology: JCDC: Student Personal Electronic Communication Devices and IIBGC: Staff Online Activities.
Technology is an important part of education, but we also recognize that it can create distractions and, when not used appropriately, create concerns about communication and professional boundaries. Our goal is to make sure technology supports education and communication, not interferes with learning or student safety.
The new student device policy establishes clear expectations for personal electronic devices during the school day. Cell phones, smartwatches, wireless earbuds, and similar personal devices are generally not to be used or accessed during the school day and are expected to be turned off and turned into the office to be securely stored. Students who need to contact a parent will have access to a school-provided telephone or communication device. The policy also provides appropriate exceptions for students with IEPs, 504 plans, or documented medical needs.
The staff online activities policy establishes clear boundaries for communication between employees and students. Staff may use district-approved technology and social media to share school information and support learning. However, staff may not privately or directly communicate with students through social media. School email, learning management systems, and other approved district platforms remain available for appropriate communication.
These policies are about creating consistency, safety, focus, and appropriate boundaries for our students and staff.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support of USD 105. Together, we can ensure technology remains a positive tool that enhances learning and strengthens communication within our school community.
Sincerely,
Eric Stoddard
Superintendent, Rawlins County USD 105
