Gary Worthy Vietnam War Prize

This $500 prize is awarded at the Kansas History Day State Contest to the best entry whose topic is related to the Vietnam War or its aftermath. It is open to all entries regardless of level or category. It is in honor of Vietnam veteran Gary Worthy from Atwood, Kansas. During the Vietnam War, Worthy was a 1st LT. Aeroscout Platoon Leader for the Air Calvary Troop of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the U.S. Army. He was severely wounded in October of 1968 and was transported to Japan, ultimately ending up in the Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver where he recovered. Several years later, Worthy was made a Major in the U.S. Army. This prize is provided through an anonymous donor and Sunflower Aero Inc.

To be eligible for this prize, students must complete the award nomination information within the online registration system, including an entry description and how the entry is related to the prize by the registration deadline date of April 8.

Nominations must include the following to be considered:  
  • Entry description and how it relates to the prize topic
  • Mailing address for each student associated with the entry 

If it is deemed that there is not an entry that meets the criteria, the prize will not be given.
