ANTICIPATED SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2007-08

In order to help seniors and their families anticipate and prepare in advance for the scholarship season I am providing this list of scholarships that were available last year. At this point the only applications I have are last years. So, if you would like a copy of last year's application so that you can start a rough draft (usually the application forms change very little from one year to the next) then please go through this list and see what you qualify for and come ask me for an old application. Parents, if your student would write out the essays and all the questions that you can't do for them now while it's not so busy, then in the spring all you or they would have to do is type them up. But remember, this is no guarantee that all of these scholarships will be available or that the application will be exactly the same. This is only meant to be a rough draft. Over the past three years few scholarship applications have changed and not many have been discontinued, but it can happen.

I recommend that you start setting up a system for keeping scholarships organized now. My personal favorite is keeping a notebook where all applications, resumes, letters of recommendations, essays are in one place. This saves an incredible amount of time next spring when you are trying to get 5-6 applications done in one week.

All seniors are required to have a resume into me by the end of September. This rough draft resume should list everything no matter how long it makes the resume. Students can either email a document or bring a disk into me. HYPERLINK "mailto:vchance@usd105.org" vchance@usd105.org

We try and get the new applications out on the board as soon as we receive them. Sometimes this is two months before the deadline and sometimes it is two weeks before the deadline. Seniors and their parents are responsible for the scholarship application process. Deadlines are non-negotiable. Make sure you know if a deadline states postmarked by or received by, this makes a big difference on when you have to mail it. I am available to answer questions and provide suggestions and transcripts.

From now until November 15th all seniors should be selecting 2-3 colleges to apply to. Usually college application fees are non-refundable and not real expensive ($25 - $50) but beware, some private institutions have application fees that can run as high as $150 to $300 non-refundable. Read the fine print before you complete an application. When a student applies to a college they should also apply for any scholarships available through that institution. Some colleges are set up where you can do the whole process on-line and some are not. Some colleges have only one application form that applies to every scholarship they offer and some do not. Almost all colleges have a website that lists all the scholarships they have but sometimes you have to know where to look. Don't forget to check out specific departmental scholarships. Don't be afraid to email the specific department and ask where their scholarships are listed. MOST DEADLINES FOR COLLEGE SPONSORED SCHOLARSHIPS ARE BETWEEN NOW AND DECEMBER 15TH.

Remember the more the student applies the more likely they are to get scholarships, but just because they apply doesn't mean that they will get them all. Students usually have to apply for 3-5 different scholarships just to get one.

BUT, THE NUMBER ONE RULE IS?

IF YOU DON'T APPLY YOU DON'T GET ANYTHING!!!
