"A Day in Her Shoes"
CAC Spearheads Project
The morning started out with a loud cheer of "Happy Birthday, Bethany!" from the grade school in recognition of the girl who has quickly become a wide-spread phenom. Bethany Hamilton, an avid surfer, was the survivor of a shark bite that left her with one arm. Despite the odds, Bethany followed her dreams of competitively surfing, has written several books, and is the subject of the popular movie, "Soul Surfer" which many of the area youth watched in December at our own Jayhawk Theatre.
High School teacher, Kathy Leitner and her Creative Arts Club (CAC), took the "A Day in Her Shoes" project on in hopes of helping others learn compassion for those in similar situations to Bethany Hamilton. The members wish to help people reflect on their own personal character if something happened to them that challenged their hopes and dreams. The club plans to capture the day's activities in pictures and video, then contact Bethany herself and share with her how this has impacted the community.
